On invitation from U.S. Representative David Price (4th District, North Carolina), N.C. State professor and Extension Specialist Dr. Rod Rejesus served as a panelist at a forum discussion about the upcoming 2018 U.S. Farm Bill. The listening session was held on December 4, 2017 in Hillsborough, NC. Dr. Rejesus was called upon to provide insights on federal crop insurance and farm safety-net programs, especially as it relates to the agricultural economy in the 4th district of North Carolina.
Rejesus joined representatives from the Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI), Farm Bureau, and Orange County Cooperative Extension, as well as local farmers and other stakeholders, to participate in the panel and address and discuss areas of concern and interest. Dr. Richard Bonanno (CALS Associate Dean and Director of NC Cooperative Extension) and Dr. Steve Lommel (CALS Associate Dean and Director of the NC Ag. Research Service) were also in attendance. Topics discussed included the potential changes to specialty crop initiatives (e.g., Whole Farm Revenue Crop Insurance) as well as programs for new farmers and organic suppliers. As a member of the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at N.C. State, Rejesus can offer an expert perspective on subjects such as the US Farm Bill, especially on crop insurance and related risk management programs.
